NEW HIGH SCHOOL — METROPOLITAN WESTERN
SUBURBS
732. Hon KEN TRAVERS to the Minister for Education:
Let us do it this way: my question
without notice is to the Minister for Education. Can the minister confirm that
he advised electors in the Perth and Churchlands electorates that there would
be a new high school in the western suburbs by 2020; and, if yes, what is the
estimated cost?

I thank the honourable member for
the question. That has always been my intent. Ideally, it would be 2019. That
was the original intent. It will not happen. The aim is 2020.
Hon Ken Travers : The aim?
Hon PETER COLLIER : Yes.
Hon Ken Travers : Is it a commitment or an aim?
Hon PETER COLLIER : I cannot make a commitment if we do
not have any land; it is as simple as that. Hon Ken Travers has only 140
characters, so what does the member want me to say?
Hon Ken Travers : You told the people that you would
have a school for them by 2020.
Hon PETER COLLIER : I said the absolute intent is to
make sure that we have a school by—we need a school by 2020.
Hon Ken Travers : We know that. I told them that.
Hon PETER COLLIER : I will try to condense it to 140
characters. Ready? Go on, tweet. Are you tweeting?
Hon Ken Travers : No, I was actually saying thanks to
people who were saying nice things about me. It doesn't happen very
often!
Hon PETER COLLIER : I am very confident. I have to be
honest with you. I am very, very confident. As I keep on saying, because there
is this little groundswell of people who have some connections, I have to say,
and I am well aware of those connections, that is pushing at the moment about
this issue —
Hon Ken Travers : Mate, it's every parent in
the western suburbs; who are they connected to?
Hon PETER COLLIER : I said to them that we could put it
on the reserve right near the ocean. The Town of Cambridge did not like that
idea.
Hon Ken Travers : Who are they connected to?
Hon PETER COLLIER : Who?
The PRESIDENT : Order! I think we have had six
questions so far. You are entitled to only one.
Hon PETER COLLIER : I really want to have this banter
with Hon Ken Travers because I am going to miss him so much. What was the
member's question again? Sorry; it was about the western suburbs
school. Hold firm. This is one occasion when I say that the member really,
hopefully, will not have to hold his breath much longer. But 2020 is my aim.
That is what I would really, really like to produce. I assume that next
Thursday is Hon Ken Travers' final day, but if that is not the case, I promise
I will invite the member to the opening.
Hon Ken Travers : How much will it cost?
Hon PETER COLLIER : A lot of money.
