❓ Hon Giz Watson questions the accuracy of land area percentages in the Burrup Peninsula Conservation Reserve Draft Management Plan, highlighting discrepancies and seeking clarification and potential apologies from the Minister. The Minister acknowledges the discrepancy and provides context, citing the Burrup Peninsula Land Use Plan and Management Strategy 1996 and the difficulty in defining the peninsula's exact area.

With regard to the land areas of the Burrup Peninsula and statements contained within the Burrup Peninsula Proposed Conservation Reserve Draft Management Plan and answers to question without notice No. 883 of Tuesday, 17 October 2006, I ask -
On Page 3 of the Proposed Burrup Peninsula Conservation Reserve Draft Management Plan 2006-2016 states - ‘The proposed Burrup Peninsula Conservation Reserve has an area of approximately 5000 hectares, which is approximately 60 percent of the whole Peninsula’. On page 15 of the document it further states - ‘The granting of the remaining 62 percent of the Burrup Peninsula to Ngardangarli, and the joint management of that land as a conservation reserve’.
(1) Is the statement on Page 3, that 5000 hectares is 60 percent of the whole peninsula correct?
(2) The Minister implied in answer (1) of question without notice No. 883, that there was no such mention of 62 percent of the Burrup Peninsula in the Proposed Burrup Peninsula Conservation Reserve Draft Management Plan. Will he now correct this assertion and apologise?
(3) Is the statement on page 15, that 62 percent of the land as a conservation reserve of the whole peninsula correct?
(4) If yes to (1) and (3), why?
(5) If no to (1) and (3), can the Minister identify approximately what percentage 5000 hectares is of the total 11700 hectares of the Burrup Peninsula?
(6) If no to (1) and (3), will the Minister apologise for misleading the community and Parliament for his answers to question without notice No. 883?

The plan also indicates on page 15 that the conservation reserve comprises 62% of the Burrup Peninsula. The Minister has acknowledged that this specific reference was not included in the previous response. The reference to 62% was sourced from the Burrup Peninsula Land Use Plan and Management Strategy 1996. The Burrup Peninsula Land Use Plan and Management Strategy 1996 is the State Government's overarching policy and planning document for the Burrup underpinning the Burrup and Maitland Industrial Estates Agreement and the Proposed Burrup Peninsula Conservation Reserve Draft Management Plan 2006 - 2016. The Department of Land Information has advised that the specific area of the Burrup Peninsula is difficult to define, however, the area could be as large as 11,700ha if the adjacent islands are included and depending on the location of the southern boundary. Following the analysis of public submissions on the draft plan, estimates for the conservation reserve will be revised for the final Burrup Peninsula Conservation Reserve Management Plan 2006 - 2016.
