PERTH ARENA AND PERTH
STADIUM — NAMING RIGHTS
591. Ms L. METTAM to the Minister for Sport and Recreation:
Given that the McGowan government
has sold the naming rights to Perth Arena and Perth Stadium, will removing the
name ''Perth'' from both Perth Stadium and Perth Arena make it
more difficult for international and interstate viewers to recognise that these
venues are situated in our great city?

I thank the member for the question.

Mr M.P. MURRAY : Can I have
some protection, Mr Speaker?
The SPEAKER : You have always
got my protection, Minister for Sport and Recreation.
Mr M.P. MURRAY : I have been
expecting this question all week. Let us face facts: who in their right mind in
any government would pay $1.5 million not to have a sign on an arena? Only that
group over there. No wonder we have $40 billion of debt—that is giving
money away. If it was so important, why did it take 10 months to put the word ''Perth''
on the arena when it was opened? Ten months! Where were they? The only reason
the sign was put up there is that during budget estimates the Speaker and I asked
whether there was ever going to be any sign there, and then they reacted. It
took 10 months to get that done.
This is a good deal, and remember
that the RAC is a Western Australian company. We are supporting Western Australian
people by putting the name out there. Anyone who has been to the Hopman Cup
knows that they do not have to look outside for the sign—it is on the
floor. The word ''Perth'' is around the perimeter; it is very
much evident. I do not see what the whinge and whine is about. I do not see how
anyone there would worry about that. We have heard about Optus Stadium, but
tell me how many people in the Asian countries watch AFL? Members should have a
think about that. They are worried about the lack of the word ''Perth''
in the footage to Asia, when most of them play soccer.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members, the
minister has asked for my protection, and I am giving it to him.
Mr M.P. MURRAY : I honestly
think it is a great deal for Western Australia. It is money that we can put
back into the community, including the sporting and tourism industry. It is
something that is very well done and something that was needed.
