AIRLINE PILOTS — INDUSTRIAL ACTION
84. Ms M. BEARD to the Premier:
I refer to the Premier's
comments about the planned strike action by the Australian Federation of Air
Pilots, urging Qantas and the pilots' association to come to an
agreement as soon as possible as this is about our economy and Western Australian
jobs. What actions has he personally undertaken with Qantas and the AFAP to
ensure that this ongoing dispute has no impact on the regions and the WA
economy more generally?

AnswerView source ↗

I advocate all the time for regional
Western Australians and regional jobs, and that is why it is important that we always take the opportunity to look at the impact
of our transport infrastructure and how it might facilitate or hinder our industries working out there in the regions. Obviously, we want Qantas and
the pilots to reach agreement, and that is why at every opportunity in front of
the media and in public, I advocate for them to resolve their differences.
Ultimately, it does not fall into our state's jurisdiction, but we
obviously urge all parties to work together to make sure that they overcome
these problems.
I will make the observation that the
pilots have agreed to suspend their industrial action in the light of the
potential weather events that might impact the west Pilbara later this week. I want
to commend the Minister for Industrial Relations, Hon Simone McGurk, for her
discussions with the pilots, providing them with information and urging them to take that action, so I welcome that.
Ultimately, it is up to the union and the employer to come to an agreement .
We urge all parties to reach an agreement as soon as possible to minimise the
impact on any industry activities.
