St John of God Midland Public Hospital
498. Hon Anthony Spagnolo to the parliamentary
secretary representing the Minister for Health Infrastructure:
I refer to the
bipartisan $200 million promise to expand St John of God Midland Public Hospital
by 2030, a commitment supported by both the Albanese government and the
Liberal–National opposition at the last federal election.
(1) Can the minister explain why the
Commonwealth budget papers show only $160 million in 2029–30, with the
remaining $40 million sitting outside the forward estimates and no guaranteed
appropriation date?
(2) Has the Cook government sought and
received a written guarantee from the Albanese government that this promise
will be delivered in full and on time?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question.
I provide the
following on the behalf of the Minister for Health Infrastructure.
(1)–(2) The redevelopment of the St John of God
Midland Public Hospital will expand capacity to meet the needs of patients in
Perth's growing eastern suburbs and the wider Wheatbelt region. The entire $200
million federal funding commitment has been provisioned for in the budget and
the funds are being provided over the forward estimates, including the out
year. We are continuing with detailed planning for this project and
construction is expected to begin next year. It is important to note that the WA
Liberals did not make any commitment to improve Midland Hospital when it had
the opportunity to do so at the 2025 election.
