RALLY AUSTRALIA
Given that today is the start of the last ever Rally Australia in Western Australia and given the decision made by the member for Rockingham to axe Rally Australia because it did not meet the government’s absolute minimum rate of return of $5 for direct expenditure, I ask - (1) Will the minister advise what was EventsCorp’s total rate of return for direct expenditure last year, or is the minister unaware of what is happening in her own department? (2) Given EventsCorp’s disappointing performance last year, can the minister explain to the thousands of spectators, volunteers, organisers and competitors the real reason that Rally Australia was axed? (3) Will the minister support the opposition’s plan to make EventsCorp independent of the ineffective Tourism WA bureaucracy; and, if not, why not? Ms S.M. McHALE

(1)-(3) I thank the member for her question, and for her advocacy on behalf of the tourism industry to such an extent that she opposes liquor licensing. Ms K. Hodson-Thomas : Go on! Ms S.M. McHALE : The member for Carine opposes daylight saving and she does not understand the importance of networking with key national operators. Ms K. Hodson-Thomas : You might be interested to hear my speech on daylight saving. Ms S.M. McHALE : Putting that to one side, I wish the organisers of Rally Australia a very successful Rally Australia in 2006. I acknowledge that this is in fact the last Rally Australia in Perth and I wish them well. The reason that the former minister decided - indeed, his decision was sanctioned by every other government minister - to terminate the government’s arrangement with Rally Australia - Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : I call the members for Capel and Hillarys to order for the first time. Ms S.M. McHALE : The reason this government’s long partnership with Rally Australia was terminated was that it did not believe it was the most effective investment of Western Australian taxpayers’ money. Mr M.W. Trenorden interjected. The SPEAKER : I call the member for Avon to order for the first time. Ms S.M. McHALE : It is as simple as that. We need to weigh up the pros and cons of the many opportunities that we have for Western Australia. I advise the member for Carine that the programs for 2006-07 and 2007-08 are very full. We have some fantastic events coming up, including the Australian Safari, and the In The City music festival, which was announced in the press today, will open up a new audience for Western Australia. Ms K. Hodson-Thomas : It is good stuff. Ms S.M. McHALE : It is good stuff; therefore, do not knock it. Ms K. Hodson-Thomas : I have not knocked it. My question was about Rally Australia. Ms S.M. McHALE : I will make it clear: I have said in this house that we look at every event opportunity on a case-by-case basis. We take into account the economic return and the return on investment. I am explaining that the decisions that I will be making in conjunction with EventsCorp will take into account the merits of each event in terms of the return on investment and the media attractions. I do not support the idiotic suggestion by the opposition to make EventsCorp independent of tourism. I have a copy of the Sun Herald , which includes a fantastic editorial for Red Bull that will be seen in Western Australia in 24 days. It is a fantastic opportunity for Perth and Western Australia. We are trying to get events that will really put Western Australia on the map. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : I call the member for Murdoch to order for the second time.

We are trying to get events that will really put Western Australia on the map. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : I call the member for Murdoch to order for the second time.
