DEMENTIA ACTION WEEK
1120. Hon Dr BRIAN WALKER to the parliamentary secretary
representing the Minister for Health:
Noting that this is Dementia Action
Week, I refer the minister to yet another recently released paper, this time
from academics at the University of Bonn, which suggests that long term,
low-dose tetrahydrocannabinol has an anti-ageing effect on the brain and can
restore cognitive abilities.
(1) What has the
Cook government done to tackle and ideally reduce the prevalence of dementia
here in WA since I last raised the issue with the minister in February of 2023?
(2) What part
does the government envisage medicinal cannabis playing in this battle, either
now or in the near future, given the growing body of research that is available
to us?
The PRESIDENT: That question
is very close to contravening standing order 105(1). I hope the answer is
relatively brief given the scope of the question.

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. The following has been provided by the Minister
for Health.
(1) The Western Australian
government has been working closely on a shared project between the Australian
government and the state and territory governments titled the national dementia
action plan. The national dementia action plan is due for release later this
year and WA Health is working with various groups to translate recommendations
into the Western Australian environment.
(2) The role of
specific medicines in the treatment of any medical condition, including
considerations around efficacy and safety, is a matter for the Therapeutic
Goods Administration, as the national medicines regulator.
