Hon Lynn MacLaren asks the Attorney General for an update on the Bail Act review and progress on reducing the number of women on remand at Bandyup Women's Prison. The Attorney General states the review is complete and amending legislation will be considered, but bail decisions are for police/courts, and prison numbers are the responsibility of the Minister for Corrective Services.

BAIL ACT —
REVIEW
221. Hon LYNN MacLAREN to the
Attorney General:
Will the Attorney General provide an update on the review of
the Bail Act and, more specifically, progress on reducing the number of women
on remand in Bandyup Women's Prison?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the
question.
The review of the Bail Act has been concluded and a proposal
for amending legislation will be considered by government shortly. The decision
to allow bail is a matter for WA Police and/or the courts, and in the case of
the courts, it is a judicial decision that the government cannot alter or
influence. The number of women on remand in Bandyup Women's Prison
falls under the portfolio responsibility of the Minister for Corrective
Services.
