BGC QUARRY SITE, UNAUTHORISED CLEARING
In relation to the recent news broadcast referring to unauthorised clearing at a BGC (Australia) Pty Ltd quarry site east of Perth - (1) Is it not true that this company operates this site under a current extractive mining licence? (2) Given the fact that this area has previously been milled and that the company has applied for extensions to the existing extractive licence, which I believe the Shire of Northam has granted, can the minister advise how the quarry could operate without the removal of this regrowth? Hon KIM CHANCE

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) The Commissioner of Soil and Land Conservation has not yet been able to establish that an extractive industry licence has been issued for quarrying on either lot 11 or lot 14 Horton Road. The site of the clearing incident, lot 14, is owned by Nabarlek Nominees Pty Ltd and carries remnant vegetation. The BGC Voyage quarry operates on a neighbouring property. (2) BGC cannot legally commence quarrying operations on lot 14 prior to its satisfying relevant statutory obligations, including the lodgment with the Commissioner of Soil and Land Conservation of a notice of intent to clear land.
