I would be delighted to provide the
house with an update of where we are. Along with the new Perth Stadium, some
other very exciting sports venues are under construction at the moment, and it
will be an exciting year for sports fans in Western Australia and Australia.
This government is making a significant investment in providing world-class
sporting facilities for both fans and players. This morning I opened the new
media centre at the Western Australia Cricket Association ground. It is a
fantastic new facility that will showcase Western Australia and Perth to the
world. It is a fantastic outcome. We also have the Western Australian Institute
of Sport high-performance centre underway and the State Netball Centre, which I
visited over the summer break, and, obviously the new Perth Stadium. It is a
very exciting chapter for sport and fans in Western Australia. It will provide
a venue for the Australian Football League, cricket, rugby and soccer, and it
will also be a great stadium concert venue in Perth. As we have heard
previously, it will incorporate state-of-the-art technology and the widest
range of seating. I have been down to look at the seats that are being trialled
at the moment. The previous Minister for Sport and Recreation has also tested
them out. The stadium also has the best hospitality options in Australia. It
will be state of the art. There has been a lot of interest in the venue, as
members would understand. Construction on the project started late last year
and we are still on track for completion in time for the 2018 AFL season, which
is very exciting. We have now commenced the process to appoint the operator.
The expression of interest document has been released. As well as the
day-to-day management, the successful operator will work very closely with
government agencies and other stakeholders to secure not only major sporting
events but also entertainment events for the multipurpose venue. The next step
for us is that once the expressions-of-interest process has been reviewed, we
will short-list respondents, and then we will go out with a formal request for
proposal; that process should be complete by late 2015. It is all moving along
really well.
It will become the heart of the
sporting and entertainment industry in Western Australia. We are very intent on
making sure local content and jobs feature very heavily. Last week we announced
that CASC—a Perth-based company—had been awarded a $30 million contract
to supply framework and concrete for the stadium. We are driving local content
and jobs, and that one in particular will create 80 new jobs—a
fantastic outcome. More than 100 tenders will be awarded during the
construction. We are anticipating more than 5 700 workers to be involved over
the next three years.
