With regard to the 1996 Report to the then Minister of Mines entitled ‘Conservation and Rehabilitation in the Gold Mining Industry’ which reviewed the 1985 Playford Reports and the subsequent debate within the Minerals Environment Liaison Committee about the establishment of a review -
(1) Will the Minister consider implementing the recommendations of that Report and the subsequent MELC deliberations that a review of the condition and state of tailings dams within the State of Western Australia be carried out?
(2) If yes, in what time frame will the implementation take place?
(3) If not, why not?

I have asked the Director General, Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources to provide me with a report on the actions taken on the matters raised in the 1996 Report referred to. When that report is received I will consider the questions now raised and respond in writing to the Honourable member.
