SOUTHERN SUBURBS RAILWAY — STATIONS 198. Hon SIMON O’BRIEN to the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure: We are going for a quinella here! I ask — (1) What is the timetable for the building of railway stations between Warnbro and Mandurah on the southern rail line? (2) How many stations will be built? (3) What is the estimated cost of each of the stations? Hon ADELE FARINA

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. (1) The supplementary master plan released by this government provided for future transit stations at Stakehill on the south side of Stakehill Road; at Karnup to the north of Paganoni Road; at Lakelands, opposite Madora Beach Road; and at Gordon Road. There is no commitment to a construction timetable for additional stations between Warnbro and Mandurah. The decision to commit to construction will be driven not only by an assessment of both the demand and the cost, but also by the overall benefits obtained from the achievement of more sustainable transport and land use outcomes. To that end, there will be ongoing work by government agencies, including the Public Transport Authority, the Department for Planning and Infrastructure and the Department of Housing and Works, to advise on the relative priority of the identified sites. From the work done to date, it appears that the next station should be built at Paganoni Road in Karnup. (2) At this stage, it is envisaged there will be a need for at least one new station in the next five years. (3) The minister has been advised that the estimated current-day cost of the type of station required is $25 million. An additional stop will impact on operations and may also require additional rolling stock.
