(i) In 2005/06 the total allocation to this project was $1.7 million. The CF allocation was $700,000. An additional $500,000 came from the National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality which is funded on a 50:50 basis by State and Commonwealth Governments. A further contribution of $500,000 is being made by the Shires participating in the project. The same arrangement and funding contributions will occur in the 2006/07 financial year. (b) A large portion of the Rural Towns - Liquid Assets project's effort is directed towards value adding including use and re-use of saline water. This is the 'Liquid Assets' part of the project. (i) As for funding to research these issues, 34% of the project budget is dedicated to examining the technical and economic feasibility of the water use / reuse schemes such as the one I mentioned above. (2) Page 280 refers to two catchment management projects, firstly the coastal catchments where the prime aim is reduction of nutrient and sediment export from rural land into the estuaries and rivers, and secondly the development of catchment water management plans primarily for wheatbelt catchments. (a) These coastal catchment projects have been initiated to address community concern over the environmental issues of nutrient and sediment export into estuaries and rivers. The catchment water management project was initiated to provide better information to catchment groups and farmers on the effectiveness of options for management of water in their landscapes. The project will address issues such as salinity, waterlogging and water conservation. (b) In all catchment projects there is wide community consultation and close cooperation with the relevant Catchment Councils such as Swan, South West and Avon. (c) All information developed through the projects will be publicly available and also delivered to appropriate organisations, both government and non-government. (3) Agricultural Research Western Australia (ARWA) is a research alliance between the Department of Agriculture and Food (DAFWA), Curtin University, Murdoch University and University of Western Australia. Under the alliance, research is conducted at all relevant locations owned by the ARWA parties. The State Government has allocated $28 million towards construction of new research facilities for DAFWA as part of the commitment to ARWA development. The initial phase of construction will be at Murdoch University campus. Once planning for the first phase of research facilities construction is further advanced, the Government will consider proposals for the subsequent construction phases and locations.
