(2) For each amount in (1), to what organisations was the funding granted and what was the nature of the research? (3) Does the State Government provide any in-kind or other support to whale shark research programs and if so, what programs and what is the nature of that support?

(1) Department of Parks and Wildlife allocated recurrent funding to whale shark research and monitoring as follows:
(a) $1 000
(b) $2 500
(c) $23 288.43
(d) $15 851.46
(e) $8 208.68
In addition, ticketing and licence fees received from whale shark tour operators and coordinated through a trust fund were allocated as follows:
(a) $43 057.13
(b) $19 907.30
(c) $79 956.28
(d) $51 009.52
(e) $2 166.01 - Note: this is an estimate up until 31 December 2013.
(2) $18 296.50 was paid to ECOCEAN in 2010-11 and $4 400 in 2011-12 to curate the whale shark photo library.
All other funding reported in (1) was used by the Department of Parks and Wildlife for research and monitoring purposes.
(3) Yes. Support from Department of Parks and Wildlife is currently provided in the form of staff time, resources, vessel use and logistics to the following programs:
· Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) for study of 'Behaviour, demography and migration patterns of whale sharks' (including archival and satellite tagging, photo identification);
· ECOCEAN for development of Australia Photo Identification Database;
· ECOCEAN for study of the 'Impact of tourism on behaviour of whale sharks' (daily diary tagging);
· Hubbs Sea-World Research Institute for tagging and photo identification;
· PhD students from various universities.
