I refer to the answers given to Hon Robin Chapple’s question on notice No. 3809 on 24 May 2011 regarding injured and/or orphaned wildlife on Barrow Island, and I ask -
(1) Regarding the answers given to (1) to (3) -
(a) how many sick, diseased, injured or abandoned fauna were removed from Barrow Island for treatment and rehabilitation on the mainland (please identify species) in -
(i) 2010;
(ii) 2009;
(iii) 2008;
(iv) 2007; and
(v) 2006?
(b) for each of the above years, how much funding was provided for treatment and rehabilitation of Barrow Island fauna on the mainland (please specify each funding source and the organisation/person to which funding was provided)?
(c) for each of the above years, how many of these fauna (please identify species) -
(i) died or were euthanised while in care;
(ii) were subsequently released on the mainland; and
(iii) were subsequently kept pursuant to a licence (please specify licence type e.g. educational purposes, scientific purposes, other approved public purposes)?
(d) has there been an evaluation of the level of success regarding the release of Barrow Island fauna on the mainland after treatment and rehabilitation?
(e) if no to (1)(d), why not?
(f) if yes to (1)(d) -
(i) when was the evaluation done;
(ii) who did the evaluation;
(iii) what were the conclusions of the evaluation;
(iv) where can a copy of the evaluation be publicly accessed; and

(1) (a) (i) One golden bandicoot and five spectacled hare-wallabies;
(ii) one spectacled hare-wallaby and one kingfisher;
(iii) one brushtail possum;
(iv) one euro and one spectacled hare-wallaby; and
(v) two spectacled hare-wallabies, one osprey and one euro.
(b) The Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) is aware that Chevron Australia has provided funding to a wildlife refuge in the Pilbara for a number of years to support these animals but does not have the details of this arrangement.
(c) (i) Two in 2006 (spectacled hare-wallabies), two in 2009 (one kingfisher and one spectacled hare-wallaby) and one in 2010 (spectacled hare-wallaby);
(ii) one in 2006 (osprey), one in 2007 (spectacled hare-wallaby) and five in 2010 (one golden bandicoot and four spectacled hare-wallabies); and
(iii) one in 2006 (euro) and one in 2008 (brushtail possum), both of which were kept under a licence to keep fauna for educational or public purposes.
(d) - (f) No. It is not considered either cost effective or scientifically valid to conduct such an evaluation.

(iii) five golden bandicoots;
(iv) five golden bandicoots, one shearwater (species not identified), one spectacled hare-wallaby and one euro; and
(v) one boodie, one euro and three golden bandicoots.
(b) DEC has been advised that Chevron Australia supported the care of these animals from operational funds but is not aware of the funding levels involved.
(c) (i) Two in 2008 (golden bandicoots);
(ii) Five in 2006 (three golden bandicoots, one boodie and one euro), eight in 2007 (five golden bandicoots, one shearwater, one euro and one spectacled hare-wallaby) and three in 2008 (golden bandicoots); and
(iii) nil.
(3) (a) - (b) No. This is not required by the conditions of Ministerial Statement 800.
(c) - (f) On Chevron's website.
(4) - (5) In the vast majority of terrestrial fauna cases, the decision as to whether an animal is cared for or euthanised is made by Chevron Australia, who have their own internal procedures and documents to guide the decision. DEC will provide advice to Chevron where it is requested.
