POLICE — DISTRICT ALLOWANCES AND RENTS
The member for North West and, in fact, the minister have been quoted as saying to the Western Australian Police Union on a number of occasions that it will soon be pleasantly surprised over issues of rents and district allowances. (1) Are these statements by the member for North West inconsistent with the minister’s current position that there will be no change to existing arrangements and indicate that the minister’s core election promise of housing our workforce cannot be met? (2) How does the minister intend to arrest the future exodus of government workers in regional Western Australia, including and especially amongst the police force, to mining jobs? Mr B.J. GRYLLS

(1)–(2) Again, I am very happy. If the member for Pilbara turns his mind to the Government Mid-year Financial Projections Statement , there is a specific line item under “Regional Community Services Fund” called “Regional Workers Incentives”, which over the coming three years from 1 July indicates $75 million in funding for regional workers incentives to ensure that those very important workers who live in regional Western Australia can do that in a way that does not see them disadvantaged by moving to regional Western Australia. As I said, the member for North West was speaking to the police in the Pilbara, and I would suggest, given that there is $75 million in the budget for regional workers incentives, they will be pleasantly surprised from 1 July.
