The University of Western Australia proposes to clear 22 of the 30.5 hectares of regionally significant bushland at the corner of Underwood Avenue and Selby Street in Shenton Park. (1) Does the minister agree that, according to experts at the Western Australian Museum, this proposal is unsustainable from the point of view of biodiversity conservation? (2) Does the minister acknowledge that the Department of Environmental Protection has not approved the Bush Forever negotiated planning solution that would allow the proposal to go ahead? (3) Is the minister aware of the high level of community concern that this proposal will proceed in the very near future? (4) In view of the above, will the minister undertake to halt the development? Hon TOM STEPHENS

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1)-(4) A proposal by the University of Western Australia to subdivide land at the corner of Underwood Avenue and Selby Street in Shenton Park has been referred to the EPA, under part IV of the Environmental Protection Authority Act, for a decision on whether it should be subject to environmental impact assessment; and, if so, the level of assessment. It is not appropriate for me to comment on the proposal while it is before the EPA.
