POLICE — GOLD STEALING DETECTION UNIT
358. Hon STEPHEN DAWSON to the Attorney General representing
the Minister for Police:
I refer to the gold stealing detection unit.
(1) How many full-time equivalent staff and sworn officer
positions exist in this unit?
(2) Are any of these positions currently vacant; and, if so,
how many?
(3) By which mechanisms and agencies is this unit funded?
(4) Will the
minister guarantee there will be no budget cuts to the gold stealing detection
unit in this week's state budget; and, if not, why not?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this
question.
(1) The gold stealing detection unit has an approved strength
of six sworn officers.
(2) Yes, there are currently two vacant positions.
(3) The GSDU's
operational expenditure is initially paid by WA Police and then recouped quarterly
from the Chamber of Minerals and Energy.
(4) There is
no budget allocation to GSDU by WA Police because the full operating costs,
inclusive of wages, are recouped from the Chamber of Minerals and Energy.
