Gallium project—Pinjarra
978. Hon Jess Beckerling to the Leader of the House
representing the Premier:
I refer to an
article in Boiling Cold of Tuesday 21
October that states that the now shuttered gallium plant near Alcoa's Pinjarra
refinery had environmental concerns about radioactive waste. What assurances
can the Premier provide that the environmental assessment of any future gallium
plants will follow standard procedures?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question. The following answer is
provided on behalf of the Premier.
The Gallium project
will require approvals under part V of the Environmental
Protection Act 1986 to assess the emissions and discharges of the
proposed activity. This includes taking into account the requirements under
Alcoa's state agreements.
