SOUTH COAST MARINE PARK —
INDICATIVE MANAGEMENT PLANS
28. Hon COLIN de GRUSSA to the Leader of the House
representing the Premier:
I refer to the
release of the indicative management plans for the proposed south coast marine
park.
(1) Does the
Premier endorse the processes undertaken by the Department of Biodiversity,
Conservation and Attractions to develop the indicative public management plans
for public comment?
(2) How did the
government develop the indicative management plans in the absence of a socio-economic
impact assessment?
(3) Does the Premier endorse the findings of the
report prepared by ACIL Allen for the DBCA titled The social and economic value of the south coast region , dated September 2023?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1) The Premier
supports the release of the indicative management plans for public comment and
encourages all Western Australians to consider the proposed marine park and
provide any feedback they may have to make this marine park even better.
(2) This is incorrect.
An independent evaluation of the potential social and economic impacts of the
proposed south coast marine park was completed.
(3) The ACIL
Allen report provides an independent evaluation of the potential social and
economic impacts of the proposed south coast
marine park. The evaluation is evidence based and is not based on opinion. The report found that the south coast marine park will have important recreation
values, including recreational fishing and other outdoor recreational
activities, that will benefit the health and wellbeing of users; will provide
improved socio-economic outcomes for local Aboriginal people; will result in
improved tourism experiences and increased visitation to the area, benefiting
tourism businesses and operators; and will have no impact on mining.
