CANNABIS —
MEDICAL EFFICACY RESEARCH
984. Hon Dr BRIAN WALKER to the Minister for Medical
Research:
I refer the minister to state
funding provided in Germany via the dedicated German Research Foundation to
researchers at the University of Jena who recently published a seminal paper in
the journal Cell Chemical Biology explaining in detail for the first
time the way in which cannabidiol induces a switch in immune cells to counter
inflammation. How many research projects into the medical efficacy of cannabis
and/or CBD have the Cook and McGowan governments funded since taking office;
and, if there have been any, will the minister please list them and the dollar
amounts in each instance?

A search of the future health
research and innovation fund grants database has returned nil funding
submissions or funding awarded for projects relating to the medical efficacy of
cannabis and/or CBD. That is not to say that such a project could not apply for
funding. I remind the member that he can subscribe to the future health
research and innovation fund newsletter that identifies when new grant rounds
are open. Over the next four years, about $250 million in grant funding will be
provided for medical research or innovation. The member might want to tell his
stakeholders that.
