MICHAEL BURVILL
521. Mrs M.H. ROBERTS to the Minister for
Police:
I refer to the sentence given to
drunk driver Michael Burvill , who killed Mr Martin
Roberts and severely injured two others. Has the minister made any request to
the Director of Public Prosecutions to appeal the sentence; and, if not, why
not?

AnswerView source ↗

First of all, I put on the record my
condolences to the family of the victim of this crash. He was a local
constituent and a key person in the Innaloo SportsmenXXX ###XXXs
Club, in my electorate. Mr Roberts was one of those people who actually
collected people and took them home when they had had too much to drink so that
they would not be a risk to other people on the road. He is a big loss to my
community.
As the member for Midland well
knows, it is not my responsibility or my province to direct the DPP, or make a request
of the DPP, to appeal that sentence, but my understanding is that police
prosecution are working with their counterparts to see whether there is an
avenue for appeal.
