MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING MACHINES - FUNDING
I refer to revelations that Kevin Rudd and the ALP plan to scrap funding for 13 urgently needed magnetic resonance imaging machines as part of their savings plan, including machines allocated to the Armadale-Kelmscott and Joondalup hospitals. I quote - Labor will re-direct funding in the 2007-08 MYEFO: Magnetic Resonance Imaging - improved access to its $2.5 billion Health and Hospital Reform Plan. Labor considers that investments in Health infrastructure need to be done on a strategic basis, not adhoc commitments which meet the political objectives of the Government. I now ask - (1) Does the minister believe that funding for MRI machines in the Armadale-Kelmscott and Joondalup hospitals is only a political objective? (2) Does he support federal Labor’s decision to scrap funding for these urgently needed MRI machines; and, if not, what is he going to do about it? Mr J.A. McGINTY

(1)-(2) I am completely unaware of any proposal to scrap the funding for the MRI machines at Joondalup and Armadale. Dr K.D. Hames : That is what they are going to do. It is an Australia-wide press release. Mr J.A. McGINTY : I think the member is misreading a particular proposal. A proposal to redirect some funds from a particular area will not lead to the conclusion the member has suggested.
