I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. (1) An intermediate care facility, in line with the Western Australian Mental Health Strategy 2004-2007, is proposed at the former Mt Hawthorn hospital site at the corner of Flinders and Woodstock Streets in Mt Hawthorn. This site has been used to provide health services for 70 years. It is of note that the strongest criticism of our Western Australian mental health system in the recently released Mental Health Council of Australia report titled “Not for Service: Experiences of Injustice and Despair in Mental Health Care in Australia” was the lack of supported community accommodation. This facility will start to address this need. (2) If and when all approvals have been received, the accommodation is intended to open in the first half of 2006 and operate for only three years. It will accommodate up to 20 residents. (3) Extensive community consultation has been undertaken to date, including briefings with the Town of Vincent, local police and school principals, as well as two community information sessions, distribution of fact sheets, appointment of a community liaison officer and establishment of a dedicated community inquiry telephone line. An extended community information program currently being developed will include the establishment of a management committee, another public information session, further briefings and distribution of additional information to residents. The minister is happy for the honourable member to receive a formal briefing on this issue. (4) Not applicable.
