As the Government found it necessary to replace the 1997 cannabis cautioning program with the Cannabis Control Act, is the Government now contemplating the introduction of legislation to formalise the policy of police diversion of minor offenders in possession of other illegal drugs of abuse, such as methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, LCD and ecstasy? I thank the member for some notice of this question. The Minister for Police and Emergency Services provides the following response: Our Government did not introduce the Western Australia Police Service’s drug diversion strategy. The Police Service advises the strategy was initiated by the Commonwealth Government and approved by the former coalition Government in 1999-2000 culminating in the commencement of the diversion strategy in three police districts in 2000. Furthermore, our Government does not intend to legislate to formalise the federal Liberal and former State Liberal Government’s diversion program.
