(1) Patient Service Assistants (PSAs) are usually rostered on with the supervision of a registered nurse. This can be a combination of Registered Nurse (RN) and Enrolled Nurse (EN) or EN and PSA. There are situations in which it is appropriate that PSAs work without the continual supervision of an RN and as such, there have been times in regional WA hospitals when PSAs have been left to work on their own.

Paraburdoo Hospital
- a PSA is in attendance on night shift with a RN on-call to attend any patient presentations. A PSA is only rostered on their own at night when there are no inpatients.
Wickham Health Centre
- has provided a limited RN service (from 0700 - 2130 Monday to Sunday) and a PSA presence overnight since 2004. An on-call RN is available at all times to attend patient presentations. Wickham Health Centre does not admit inpatients at all.
Leonora Hospital
- there has not been any acute in-patient admissions since April 2007. Due to extreme nursing staff shortages on 19 and 20 November 2007, two PSAs were rostered on night duty at the hospital. A RN was rostered to provide an on-call service overnight.
Boyup Brook Multi-Purpose Service
- during these two occasions, a RN was on-call on-site in the nursing quarters, if required. These occasions occurred as a result of unexpected staff illness.
