JAMES PRICE POINT — LIQUEFIED NATURAL GAS DEVELOPMENT
In light of the Premier’s announcement on 23 December 2008 that James Price Point, near Broome, is the government’s preferred site for liquefied natural gas development — (1) Can the Premier guarantee that if the project receives final approval to proceed at that location, no other approvals will be given by the government for further LNG projects elsewhere along the Kimberley coast? (2) Can the Premier guarantee that no government approvals will be given for ports and alumina refineries in the north Kimberley related to the mining of bauxite in the Mitchell Plateau region? (3) If the Premier cannot guarantee that other sections of the Kimberley coast will not be selected and approved for heavy industry projects, what is to stop the globally significant Kimberley coastline and marine environment being progressively impacted on and degraded by ad hoc industrialisation? Hon NORMAN MOORE

One of these days somebody will get a job in this state, although Hon Giz Watson will be responsible for making sure they do not. (1)-(3) The government is committed to the development of a single site in the Kimberley for the processing of Browse Basin LNG. Negotiations are proceeding on the basis that the site is for LNG processing only, with no downstream or other industry uses being contemplated. Work is also underway on a Kimberley science and conservation strategy that will assist in ensuring that any future land uses, including conservation outcomes, are agreed in consultation with all affected stakeholders. The government can guarantee that ad hoc development will not be allowed to occur in this significant area.
