The Department has retrieved the hard copy of the Child Welfare Annual Report 1950/51 and no reference can be found to 12 juveniles sent to jail in that year.
The Report does identify that 51 jail sentences were meted out to juveniles during 1950/51. The report does not provide a breakdown of the 51.
Without supplying names, the information requested by the Hon Barbara Scott will need to be manually searched and retrieved, requiring substantial resources including time.
I am not prepared to divert considerable resources from the work of protecting children and young people for this purpose.
This task may be more realistic if information is sought about a particular person or persons and their names were provided. I do not think it appropriate for them to be publicly identified, but if the honourable member wishes to discuss this matter with my office I am prepared to seek further advice from the Department with a view to assisting if practicable.
