MUIRS HIGHWAY AND CHESTER PASS ROAD
Given that this year’s grain harvest is about to start in the great southern and that timber haulage in the great southern is reaching record levels, I draw the minister’s attention to the patchwork repair job done on both Muirs Highway and Chester Pass Road through the Stirling Ranges. (1) Is the minister aware that in both cases the roadworks have deteriorated significantly and appear to offer little improvement for domestic and industrial users? (2) Does the minister accept that both roads continue to pose a serious safety risk and that urgent action is required? (3) Given that both roads require comprehensive reconstruction, will the minister increase the priority of these roads on the list of projects to be funded in the 2007-08 state budget? Ms A.J.G. MacTIERNAN

(1)-(3) I am aware that on these roads, as on many roads across the state, there are always opportunities for upgrades. We are putting money into Muirs Highway. We have made it very clear that there are moneys in the budget for that. I do not have the precise figures with me at the moment. We are continuing works on Muirs Highway at both the Mt Barker and Manjimup ends, and we will continue to do so throughout the period of the forward estimates. There are moneys in the budget for that work. Wherever the opportunity presents itself to increase those moneys, we will endeavour to do so.
