In response to my question of Wednesday, 23 October 2002 about class sizes, the parliamentary secretary informed the Parliament that, in 2002, 1 708 classes from preprimary to year 3 exceeded 24 children.  No breakdown of those figures was provided. (1) How many preprimary classes exceeded 24 children in 2002? (2) How many year 1 classes exceeded 24 children in 2002? (3) How many year 2 classes exceeded 24 children in 2002? (4) How many year 3 classes exceeded 24 children in 2002? Hon GRAHAM GIFFARD

I thank the member for some notice of this question.  The staffing formula is based on adjusted enrolment and provides sufficient teaching staff to allow class sizes in years 1 to 3 of no greater than 24 children.  However, principals, in consultation with community members and teachers, can choose alternative groupings to best meet student educational and social needs at the local level.  It is also the case that schools use support teachers in many classrooms as part of the teaching program. (1) 148. (2) 445. (3) 525. (4) 519.
