I refer to the installation of the MRI machine at Albany Health Campus and ask: (a) could any of the work necessary for the operation of the MRI machine (for example, but not limited to, a quench pipe, wall panelling, flooring, lighting, a chiller, electrical services, mechanical services and roof safety provisions) have been done during the construction of the hospital, and if so, what were they; (b) what is the reason that this essential infrastructure for the MRI machine to operate will now have to be installed after the construction of the hospital; (c) has this led to any delay in the planned installation time of the MRI, and if so by how long; (d) what is the exact nature of the works needed to be done for the MRI to be operational; (e) when will the tender for this work be let; (f) what is the estimated price range for this work; and (g) when is the MRI machine expected to be ready for use by patients?

(a) Yes. The Albany Health Campus (AHC) capital works program included future planning with the provision of space for a future MRI suite.  The design of AHC gave consideration to the type of MRI that would reasonably be installed in relation to requirements for space, heat and service provision to the allocated space. Work was also undertaken during the construction of the hospital to enable the future planned installation of the MRI including:
·
A clear path from the main entrance to the MRI room with an easily removable stud wall to facilitate the installation of the MRI.
·
The running of medical gasses to and terminating above the MRI room.
·
Holes cored in the slab during construction to allow a run for the quench pipe.
·
The remainder of the room left as a shell to facilitate the installation of a faraday cage, which is required to block external electromagnetic interference which may affect the functioning of the MRI.
(b) Installation was always planned to occur after completion of the $170 million AHC.  Completing all work necessary for the full installation of the MRI to the almost completed construction of the AHC was likely to have delayed practical completion (March 2013) and increased the cost significantly given the complexity and timing.
(c) No.
(d) The installation of an MRI includes the following works within the allocated room:
· Faraday Enclosure
· Quench Pipe
· Wall panelling
· Flooring
· Ceiling
· Lighting
· Chiller
· Electrical services
· Mechanical services
· Roof safety provisions
(e) The tender was awarded to Smith's Construction on 6 February 2014.
(f) $653,289.32 ex GST.
(g) Installation and commissioning of the MRI is scheduled to be completed by July 2014 and the MRI is expected to be ready for use in August 2014.
