INTERSTATE
PATIENT TRAVEL SCHEME CLAIMS — PERITONECTOMY SURGERY
1011. Hon MATT BENSON-LIDHOLM to the minister representing
the Minister for Health:
(1) How many
interstate patient travel scheme claims have been made to date to cover
peritonectomy surgery in New South Wales since Western Australia stopped
performing this surgery in late 2010?
(2) What is
the average cost for each IPTS claim for WA patients and their carers to travel
to New South Wales for peritonectomy surgery?
(3) What is the total amount —
(a) paid by
the WA Department of Health to the New South Wales department of health for all
peritonectomy procedures conducted in New South Wales; and
(b) paid in IPTS claims for
patient and carer accommodation, transfers and travel?
(4) What is
the total average cost to the WA Department of Health per peritonectomy
procedure, including total medical costs, staff costs and fees paid to the New
South Wales department of health and IPTS claims for patient and carer
accommodation, transfers and travel?

I thank the member for some notice
of this question.
(1) From
November 2011 to October 2012, the department supported 15 patients to go to
New South Wales for peritonectomy-related care. Two patients required more than
one trip. Further time would be needed to extract data prior to November 2011.
There were no rejected claims.
(2) The total
amount spent on travel and accommodation for these patients was $15 772.42. The
total amount spent for the escorts to accompany these patients was $35 218.
Thus, the average per patient cost, including that of the escort accompanying
them, is $3 399.36.
(3) (a) In
2010–11, the last year that we had full data due to accounts being
reconciled once a year, $702 409 was paid to New South Wales for treatment of
11 patients. This captures two public and nine private patients.
(b) Refer to part (2).
(4) The total average cost is $66 855 per peritonectomy.
