(1) What is the current estimate of the number of people homeless in - (a) the city of Perth; (b) the Perth metropolitan area; and (c) the remainder of Western Australia? (2) Are these numbers rising or falling? (3) What is the government doing to address this problem? Hon KATE DOUST

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. I am advised - (1) The figures from the 2001 Australian Bureau of Statistics census are - (a) central metropolitan, 211; (b) the remainder of the Perth metropolitan area, 265; and (c) the remainder of Western Australia, 1 766. (2) This will not be known until the 2006 ABS census is conducted; however, if the number of callers to the homeless help line is an indication, it can be said that the number is falling. (3) The government established the State Homelessness Taskforce in 2001. Based on the task force’s report, the government developed the State Homelessness Strategy and approved $32 million over four years to address homelessness issues. Independent consultants were contracted in late 2003 to conduct an evaluation of the implementation. The consultants, Estill and Associates Pty Ltd, found that the implementation of the government’s initiatives in response to the State Homelessness Taskforce recommendations was both satisfactory and timely.
