Will the minister advise the House of any new training initiatives in the south west region, in particular in the wine and tourism industries? Hon N.F. MOORE

I thank the member for some notice of this question. Last night the Minister for Employment and Training officially launched a 12-month pilot traineeship for wine tourism. The traineeship was developed following commitments made by the State Government in the Department of Training and Employment’s plan, “The Way Forward for the Western Australian Wine Tourism Industry”. The wine tourism traineeship scheme, part of the State’s youth employment initiative Access All Areas, is a national first and will serve to maintain Western Australia’s reputation as an international leader in wine tourism as well as provide long-term employment opportunities for young people in the south-west. The training program is a partnership between the department, Jobs South West Inc and the Margaret River Campus of South West Regional College of TAFE. The traineeship responds to industry’s concerns at the lack of suitably trained workers and focuses on the development of skills such as customer relations; sales; wine and food knowledge; promotion of associated wine tourism attractions; and marketing. Western Australia has a world-class wine industry and it is imperative that people employed in wine tourism have the skills to match. This is another example of how the State Government is supporting the needs of business and encouraging employment opportunities.
