GOVERNMENT CONTRACTS —
HUAWEI
39. Mr P.A. KATSAMBANIS to the Premier:
I have a supplementary question. I am
not sure what the Premier is hiding but will he outline to the house —
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members to my
right!
Mr P.A. KATSAMBANIS : It has
now got to 10 times. Will the Premier outline to the house and the public of Western
Australia on what date he first became aware of the issues in that briefing
note because one day the public will eventually find out, regardless of whether
he tells us or not.

I have answered the question to the
best of my knowledge. The member keeps talking about the $1 billion automatic
train control system, which the government has not committed to. There is no
contract for an automatic train control system. The member's questions
are always filled with preamble that is inaccurate and wrong.
Mr P.A. Katsambanis interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for
Hillarys, you have had a chance to ask your question.
Mr M. McGOWAN : The theme of
the member's argument is that somehow there is some huge conspiracy or
threat to Australia or Western Australia out of this. I note, today or
yesterday—is today the eleventh?
A government member: No, the
fourteenth—Valentine's Day!
Several members interjected.
Mr M. McGOWAN : I note that on
11 February an article in The Sydney Morning Herald had the headline, ''Australian
government works with Huawei despite 5G ban.'' It turns out that the
Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing commonwealth taxpayers'
money to Huawei as part of its ongoing project called ''Seeds for the
Future.'' If the member for Hillarys has such great concerns I hope he
is raising them with the federal government, which is giving Australian
taxpayers' money to the company he has concerns about.
