Through Suicide Prevention 2020, the Mental Health Commission (MHC) has implemented a number of suicide prevention initiatives that will provide services across the State, including the South West. These include:
· Strategic Partnerships with Netball WA and WA Football Commission to increase capability of coaches and players to identify and appropriately respond to players and peers demonstrating at risk behaviour, as well as increasing playing group awareness of local mental health services. A focus for this partnership is the South West region.
· Implementation of the Response to Suicide and Self-Harm in Schools program (School Response). The School Response program provides support to schools across the State in preventing and responding to incidents of self-harm and suicide. This interagency program includes Department of Health Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, Department of Education and Youth Focus. Youth Focus has an office in the South West providing specialist mental health youth clinical services throughout the area.
There are a number of initiatives currently under development as part of Suicide Prevention 2020 that will increase suicide prevention funding in the South West. These include:
· Placement of a dedicated Suicide Prevention Regional Coordinator position in the South West region. The position will be responsible for coordinating the development, implementation and evaluation of suicide prevention, intervention and postvention activity at a local and regional level. The position is expected to be in place by April 2016.
· Release of a suicide prevention community grants program to enable service providers and community groups to identify and implement sustainable activities to prevent suicide within their local community. The first found of funding is expected by be open for applications in February 2016.
