JULIEKA
IVANNA DHU — DEATH IN CUSTODY
680. Mr B.S. WYATT to the
Minister for Health:
I refer to the tragic
death of Julieka Dhu in Port Hedland last month.
(1) When declaring a person fit to return to
prison, is it the policy of the Department of Health to have a doctor make the
examination and declaration?
(2) Can the minister advise the house whether
a doctor did, in fact, examine Ms Dhu on the two occasions she was taken to
Port Hedland Hospital and then declared fit to return to prison?

(1)–(2) I cannot provide any advice.
Perhaps the member can direct part of his question to the Minister for
Corrective Services. I would be very pleased to get the answer on the health
component of the question for the member and provide it as soon as it is
available.
