POVERTY
1324. Hon
LYNN MacLAREN to the minister representing the Minister for Community
Services:
I refer to the latest report from
the Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre, ''Falling through the cracks:
Poverty and disadvantage in Australia'', which states that Perth has the
second highest number of people living in severe poverty in an Australian
capital city, despite the recent boom.
(1) What is the
proportion of women versus men living in severe poverty?
(2) What
proportion of those living in severe poverty are single parents supporting
dependent children?
(a) What is the
split between men and women?
(b) What is the
average age of the dependants?
(3) In what areas
of Perth is severe poverty most prevalent?
(4) What is the
government doing to decrease the level of severe poverty in Perth?

I thank the member for some notice
of the question.
''Falling through the cracks:
Poverty and disadvantage in Australia'', is obviously a report from the
Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre.
(1)–(3) I
suggest that the member contact the authors of the report she quoted from to
seek that information.
(4) The WA
government believes that establishing and maintaining a strong, resilient and
inclusive economy establishes the primary foundation for reducing poverty.
