ENVIRONMENT AND CONSERVATION — FIREFIGHTERS
658. Hon ED DERMER to the minister representing the Minister
for Environment:
I refer to statements attributed to the Minister for
Environment in The West Australian of
17 September 2012 that Department of Environment and Conservation firefighter
numbers will be boosted to 286.
(1) Will the minister confirm that the current number of
fire-fit DEC firefighters is currently 246?
(2) If this number is not correct,
what is the correct figure?
(3) Of the additional firefighters,
how many will be seasonal and how many will be permanent?
(4) In which districts will the additional firefighters be
located and when will they commence employment?

I thank the member for some notice of the question.
(1)–(2)
The numbers to which the member refers are the numbers of permanent and
seasonal conservation employees the Department of Environment and Conservation
employs in its three south west forest regions. DEC conservation employees
undertake a range of duties; however, fire management is their priority role.
The number of fit conservation employees at present is fewer than the figure
the member has quoted because the recruitment of seasonal employees and new
permanent employees is currently underway.
(3) Approximately
19 new permanent conservation employees will be appointed. In addition, DEC
received funding in the 2012–13 budget to extend the contracts of
seasonal conservation employees to maximise prescribed burning achievement.
(4) DEC aims
to have all 286 permanent and seasonal conservation employees appointed by 1
December 2012. Appointments will be across all six districts in the DEC south
west forest regions; namely, the Swan coastal, Perth hills, Wellington,
Blackwood, Donnelly and Frankland districts.
