Hon John Fischer questions the Minister for Consumer and Employment Protection regarding a $14,000 compensation payout by the Metropolitan Cemeteries Board, suggesting it's an outrageous claim given delays in WorkCover provisions. The Minister deflects, stating it's a public liability issue and should be directed to the relevant minister.

I took note of an article in The West Australian on Friday, 7 November 2003 titled “Fall at funeral earns $14,000”. The article went on to say that compensation was agreed to, with the parties settling on Monday for that amount. Given the Government’s tardiness in allocating fair compensation under proposed WorkCover provisions, will the minister explain what justified this seemingly outrageous claim that was agreed to by the Metropolitan Cemeteries Board? Hon NICK GRIFFITHS

The member’s question verges on being contrary to standing orders, but I will not pursue the point. It is very argumentative and puts forward the honourable member’s view of the world, which is mistaken. In future, the member should ask his questions in line with standing orders. However, I will not dwell on that. The Minister for Consumer and Employment Protection has provided the following response - The claim referred to is a public liability issue, not a workers compensation issue. This question should be directed to the minister responsible for the Metropolitan Cemeteries Board.
