SPEECH
THERAPISTS — SCHOOL VISITS — SOUTH WEST REGION
1128. Hon ADELE FARINA to the
parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Health:
I refer to my question on notice 3206.
(1) If the WA
Country Health Service does not collect information about the number of hours
of speech pathology provided at each school, the number of children at each
school accessing these services and the number of children at each school on
the waitlist to access these services, how does the WA Country Health Service
determine whether the services are being directed where they are most needed
and whether additional services are needed at particular schools?
(2) Is this information collected by the Department of
Education?
(3) Will the
Minister for Health direct the WA Country Health Service to collect this
information; and, if not, why not?

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the
question.
(1) In
assessing referrals for speech pathology services, the school that a child
attends is noted, and this information is utilised in case load management. The
senior speech pathologist has an overview of referral trends and also allocates
speech pathology resources to cover the various schools. The speech pathologist
allocated to a school maintains a relationship with the teachers and provides
support as necessary.
(2) The WA
Country Health Service is unaware of any data collection on the number of
referrals to speech pathology per school by the Department of Education.
(3) There is a
planned update to the computerised patient administration system that will
enable collection of site location for each service provided. The planned
update is scheduled for commencement on 2 November 2015.
