580. Hon SUE ELLERY to the Minister for
Education:
(1) Since the
incident where a female staff member was threatened with a knife at an
engagement centre on 4 April this year, have there been any other incidents at
any of the engagement centres?
(2) If yes, what
are the details?
(3) Have staff at
the state's 13 engagement centres had training to deal with violent
adolescents; and, if yes, what is the training?
(4) Have primary
school–trained teachers working with high school students had extra
training?

(1) Yes, one.
(2) The incident
involved a piece of fruit being thrown at a staff member at the Redcliffe
Engagement Centre who was hit in the face and received minor injuries.
(3) Yes. By the
end of 2016, all staff who work directly with students will have completed
Team-Teach violence de-escalation and restraint training. All engagement centre
psychologists will have completed therapeutic crisis intervention training.
Accredited Team-Teach tutors are
available to deliver professional learning in every region across the state.
Tutors are accredited to provide de-escalation and restraint training to school
staff within their centre, schools or the region.
(4) All teaching
staff in engagement centres will receive the same level of training.
