I thank the member for some notice of this question. The Minister for Police and Emergency Services has supplied the following answer - (1) Western Australia Police advises that 1 418 officers throughout regional Western Australia will change from the khaki uniform to the blue uniform progressively over the next six months. To date, 424 officers in the south west and Peel districts have changed to the blue uniform. A trial is currently under way in the north west region to ascertain the suitability of the fabric for the weather conditions in that area. The cost is approximately $850 per officer. (2) The police advise that the new uniform is more functional, easy to maintain and of better quality. The fabric was selected due to its durability, ease of maintenance, coolness in the heat and warmth in the cold, and it meets the Australian standards. (3) The police advise that the changeover is expected to be completed by 29 April 2006.
