Dr Edwards questions the Minister for the Environment regarding specific logging plans, locations, and estimated yields of jarrah and karri in the Swan and Central forest regions for 2000-2001 and 2001-2003, differentiating between regrowth and old-growth forests. The Minister provides some data and explains limitations.

The Minister Replied:
(1) (a) and (2) (a)
Harvest planning activity will occur within the forest blocks and compartments in the Swan Region during 2000-01 listed in the tabled paper. Subsequent logging operations are likely to occur but in some instances may be deferred or amended as the routine coupe-level planning proceeds.
The anticipated quantities of log products that will be available to meet log supply targets from the areas included in the Swan Region logging plan for 2000-01 are also listed in the tabled paper. A portion of the volume shown will 'carry-over' into the subsequent year from those areas where logging operations commence late in the year. These estimates will also be progressively refined to accommodate variation in boundaries at the coupe plan level.
(1) (b) and (2) (b)
The staged development of logging plans for subsequent years will proceed as the logging planning processes for the 2000-01 plan are finalised.
(3) Detailed yield estimates by forest structural categories are not routinely prepared, as the silvicultural guidelines for jarrah do not vary on a forest structural basis, nor are the boundaries of harvesting operations constrained to those categories.
Natural karri forest does not occur in the Swan Region, so there are no areas scheduled for harvest during this period.
(4) (a) and (5) (a)

There are no areas of karri forest scheduled for harvest in the Central Forest Region during 2000-01.
