The Albany Plantation Export Company (APEC) woodchip already exists in the timber precinct and the following companies are proposing to establish: · Great Southern Plantations (GSP) to establish a woodchip mill to export blue gum woodchips · Lignor Pty Ltd to establish an engineered strand lumber plant. · Beacons International to establish a biomass power station. All four developments have considerable synergies, with Beacons planning to utilise the waste product from GSP, APEC and Lignor. Beacons could also provide electricity to the other projects as well as waste heat to Lignor. The precinct is currently going through the process of being re-zoned from rural to industry. These projects offer excellent potential for developing a sustainable timber industry precinct. Accordingly, the Beacons/Lignor Working Group chaired by the Great Southern Development Commission is keen to ensure that the Mirambeena Timber Processing Precinct is "project ready". To achieve "project ready" status a number of infrastructure issues must be addressed. These issues are currently being documented in a submission to Cabinet seeking State Government support for a common user infrastructure package comprised of land, infrastructure for water and power, and rail and road linkages. The Gallop Government named the development of the Mirambeena Timber Processing Precinct as a priority project in the 2005 State election.
