❓ Hon Giz Watson questions the Minister for Environment regarding the lack of a silvicultural prescription for marri trees, particularly in relation to the conservation of the forest red-tailed black cockatoo. The Minister responds that guidelines are deemed unnecessary due to marri's role as a secondary species and limited market demand.

FOREST MANAGEMENT PRESCRIPTIONS
82. Hon GIZ WATSON to the minister representing the
Minister for Environment:
I refer to the successful application in 2004 to change the
status of the forest red-tailed black cockatoo from ''priority 3''
to ''threatened'' and, in particular, the fauna nomination form
dated 27 January 2004. I refer to the statement at paragraph 9 that the species'
management needs and implications includes, ''Retain mature and
over-mature marri trees for nest and food source as part of forest management
prescriptions. [Currently the species of tree selected for habitat trees is not
specified and there is no silvicultural prescription for marri, unlike karri
and jarrah]''.
(1) Is there now a silvicultural prescription for marri?
(2) If yes to (1), will the minister
please table it?
(3) If no to (2), why not?
(4) If no to (1) —
(a) why not;
(b) what action is the minister or
the department taking to introduce one;
(c) and if the answer to (4)(b) is
none, what are the reasons for this?

I thank the member for some notice of this question.
(1) No.
(2)–(3) Not applicable.
(4) Silvicultural
guidelines are considered to be unnecessary for marri as marri trees occur as a
secondary species in mixed stands of jarrah, karri or wandoo forest.
Silvicultural guidelines have been established for jarrah, karri and wandoo
forest types to meet the requirements of the ''Forest management plan
2004–2013''. Additionally, there is a limited market for marri
wood products and silvicultural guidelines address the FMP's
requirements for retaining marri in mixed stands as a result of the limited
market.
