I thank the member for that
question. Despite having a bit of an incident this morning and needing to visit
a doctor, I was able to meet with the working group from the secondary freight
network early this morning to go through its proposal and make a joint
undertaking of how we are going to approach it. I also requested a special
meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister tomorrow so that I can outline our
support for improving freight routes throughout the wheatbelt. I requested that
meeting—the request did not come the other way—so that I can go
through the proposal. I also met with the working group this morning and I have
all its notes. We are working to see how that working group can work with the
freight strategy task force, and how they can work well together. We want to
make sure that all the analyses done by local government groups and the state
government match. Our priority setting will be important.
I understand that one of the things
on Friday's agenda at the ministers' meeting more generally is
enhancing investment in road safety. As I understand it, potentially, further
funds will be on the table for road safety. I will be making the point that the
wheatbelt is a key road safety concern. All the statistics show that what is
happening in the wheatbelt is simply not
good enough. I think that between that project and other potential funds that
are coming forward under specific
programs, I will secure as much funds for regional WA from the Deputy Prime
Minister as I can.
