CORONAVIRUS —
REMOTE ABORIGINAL COMMUNITIES
424. Hon KEN BASTON to the Leader of the House representing
the Minister for Community Services:
(1) Are
quarantine or self-isolated periods required for residents who have recently
left remote communities and may wish to return to their community?
(2) If no to (1),
why not?
(3) If yes to
(1), how are these isolation requirements monitored and checked before
residents are allowed to re-enter remote communities?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1)–(3) Remote
communities' travel restrictions are in place to protect the health and
wellbeing of residents in the Kimberley and remote Aboriginal communities.
Under these arrangements, any person who is outside a designated area can enter
that region only if that person is providing essential services or supplies;
has been quarantined from the general public for the previous 14 days;
qualifies for a special exemption, including
mining and food production; and adheres to strict conditions that minimise the
risk of COVID-19 spread. Applications for exemptions can be submitted
through the G2G PASS portal or by submitting an ''entry into designated areas biosecurity'' form. Both
these mechanisms are overseen by the Western Australia Police Force.
Returning residents are required to quarantine prior to entering remote
communities within the biosecurity areas unless an exemption is approved by the
relevant human biosecurity officer. I table a copy of the information published
by the government on travel restrictions to remote Aboriginal communities.
Further information on travel restrictions and the arrangements in place to
honour those in quarantine or self-isolation should be referred to the Minister
for Police.
