I refer the minister to the Labor Party policy entitled “Labor’s Plan for Fisheries”. (1) How does the minister explain the comment in this policy that increased investment in fisheries management, research, community education and compliance is required for our fisheries to continue to be managed at sustainable levels when the policy also clearly states that it does not include any new funding? (2) Why has the government failed to provide any new funding to recreational and commercial fishing sectors in this policy? Hon JON FORD

(1)-(2) I do not see a conflict in what the member is saying. Funding for this portfolio is shared between industry and the government. The government will commit extra funding, as it promised, for recreational fisheries through its involvement in the integrated management scheme. A review of the industry-based funding is also being undertaken to make sure that it is more focused on commercial and industry outcomes.
