I refer to the Wallatin/O’Brien Catchment Demonstration Initiative and the need for monitoring of the 15 demonstration projects over the next ten years, and ask:
(a) has the Treasurer received a request for funding for monitoring of the demonstration projects; and
(i) if so, who made the request and what was the Treasurer’s response;
(b) given the significant State Government investment into this and similar projects, would the Treasurer be willing to commit funding to ensure the monitoring necessary to evaluate the initiative is undertaken; and
(i)
if not, why not?

Hon. C.C. Porter - the Treasurer advises:
(a) No.
(i) Not applicable.
(b) Not at this stage.
(i) A report into Catchment Demonstration Initiatives (CDI), including the Wallatin/O'Brien CDI project, was recently prepared for the State Natural Resource Management (NRM) Office. The report found that the benefits of CDI were inconclusive and as a consequence, the Department of Agriculture and Food has determined that it does not need to continue intensive monitoring of this project. The local catchment group could seek funds through the Regional NRM Councils or the State NRM program should they wish to continue monitoring.
